How to cure boredom!

Productive things to do when you are stuck at home.

Here’s my list of eleven productive things that you can do when you are stuck inside your house. I like to do these when I’m bored, have time to kill or just generally don’t know what to do with myself.

Read

I know what you’re thinking, we all think of this when we are bored. How many times have you told yourself I’m going to read this book when I have spare time. Only to find when you actually have that spare time you end up procrastinating or mindlessly scrolling through Instagram or TikTok. Reading is so important and it has so many benefits yet we don’t often make enough time for it. Some of the main benefits of reading are stress reduction, memory improvement and improved concentration.

Watch YouTube

One of my favourite things to do is watch youtube videos. I love to watch youtube videos about topics and ideas that inspire me or are about a topic I’d like to learn more about. Watching these videos is an easy, fun and effective way to find this information. I am currently watching lots of videos about minimalism and productivity and how I can implement some new things and ideas into my daily life. Some of my favourite YouTubers at the moment are Kyra Ann for anything and everything minimalism, money-saving and organisation. Sedona Christina for self-care, intentional and sustainable living. Last but certainly not least, Gittemary Johansen for inspiration about living a zero-waste and plastic-free lifestyle. It’s important for you to find your own YouTubers and video topics that inspire you and make you think.

Cook something

Another thing I enjoy doing is researching and testing new recipes. I have a Pinterest board of some of my favourite tried and tested recipes from microwave cookies to stir fry. There are so many different recipes available on the internet for you to try. Cooking is also a good way to beat stress after a long day of school or work coming home to cook can be an easy way to relieve tension and stress from your busy day. Learning to cook at home means you can invite friends around to try foods you love and spend quality time with them. It is also generally much healthier for you than a ready meal or a takeaway. Cooking food at home will also save you lots of money in the long run as takeaways are expensive.

Learn something

Learning is so important but as we grow older we learn less and less. Life is busy with work and socialising with friends taking up most of our time and then when we do get spare we want to relax. I know this too well, always telling myself I’ll do it later or another day and then when it gets to that time we don’t do it. I’ve just recently started using Skillshare and I love it. There are thousands of classes about hundreds of different topics for beginners, moderate and advanced students. All the classes are short videos for you to follow along each day. Some of my favourite classes at the moment are:

Workout

This can be anything like going for a walk, doing some yoga or following an exercise video. I personally have been doing either a workout video or yoga video on youtube in the morning. I have implemented this in my morning routine to ensure even if I stay home all day I get some movement or exercise into my day. By implementing this in my morning routine it means that I have at least accomplished one thing and if I don’t do anything else that day it’s not too bad. However, you don’t have to do this in the morning as I do, you can do it whenever you have free time. There are so many videos on youtube you can do some only the length of a song and some an hour long.

Clean

Often in our busy lives, we neglect or forget certain things, like dusting the lampshade or hoovering behind the sofa. Cleaning doesn’t have to take you a long time or be difficult. When you’re bored or have time to fill try to do one of those cleaning tasks that you’ve been putting off or forgetting about. I enjoy

Declutter

This is not the same thing as cleaning, decluttering is removing unnecessary items from your home. Whether that be a draw that all the knick-knacks, mail, pens and other little bits go into or your wardrobe. Decluttering will not only help to occupy you it will also help you in your day to day life as a clutter-free home will ease your stress and help your house feel like a more relaxing and productive space rather than a cluttered stressful space.

Self-care

Self-care is important as it boosts your confidence and self-esteem. I think everyone should do some sort of self-care at least once a week in order to boost your mood and help you cope better with the stresses in your life. There are so many aspects of self-care and there are so many different things you can do. It doesn’t have to be complicated or take a long time. Some of my favourite quick things to do for my self-care are doing a facemask, cooking myself a quick and healthy meal and going for a walk to clear my head.

Meditate

So many of the worlds most successful people meditate daily and there are so many different benefits of meditation. A lot of people don’t know where or how to start meditating. It doesn’t have to be complicated though, as there are so many apps, websites and videos that can help you. Meditation is something that I have implemented in both my morning and night routines, however, can be done whenever you have free time.

Set intentions or goals

Goal setting is important and allows us to focus our time and give us something to work on. I like to pick a new goal for every month so I have something to focus on doing throughout the month and once it’s completed I get a sense of achievement and look forward to planning my next goal.

Create a vision board

During your spare time, you can make a vision board to tie in with the goals you have set yourself. I like to make my vision boards on Pinterest as it’s easy to do and there are thousands of images for you to choose from. I make vision boards for all types of goals such as make-up, outfits, home decor and bullet journals. Making and looking at vision boards will help you to identify your vision/ goal and give it clarity. When you make a vision board and look at it daily it will help you to focus on your goals and ring them to life.
