What Is Happiness?
We all want to be happy but sometimes life gets in the way. We live very busy lives and often don’t leave time for the things that make us happy.
We all want to be happy but what is happiness? One definition I like is…
Happiness is simply the ability to not want more; to find gratitude and satisfaction in the moment that you have right now.
In other words, happiness is about being satisfied with everything you have now rather than wanting more. If you are constantly putting yourself down or focusing on negative things in your life you won’t be happy. You also shouldn’t base happiness off the items you own or think I’ll be happy when I buy this. If you do this you will constantly be looking for something new, something that will make you happy and you won’t be satisfied.
Simple Ways To Be Happy
Start A Gratitude Journal
I love my gratitude journal and it has helped me so much! It has improved my mood and general outlook on life and allowed me to become a happier, more fulfilled person. When I first started I only wrote one thing and some days I struggled to do that but now I find It much easier and write at least three things and sometimes more. I do this every single morning when I wake up.
You don’t need to have any fancy pens or paper, I just use a notebook and whatever pen I have to hand. Write down at least one thing you are grateful for every day. This will help you become more grateful and satisfied with your life.
This may sound bizarre but sitting or standing and being still for just a few minutes every day can really help to improve your mood. You can sit still and meditate, focus on breathing or just let your mind wander and get lost with your thoughts.
Spending a few minutes doing nothing, just staying still can be really beneficial to you. It can help to slow you down focus on your breathing and your thoughts. It also will instil in you the importance of making time for yourself.
Do Something You Love
Have you noticed when you do something you love you always get a mood boost and feel much better afterwards? This can be a super simple way of being happier. Make time to do something you love every day. It doesn’t matter if it is five minutes or an hour doing what you love. It will boost your mood and doing it daily will also help as you have something to look forward to every day.
Spend Time With People
Humans are very social. Being social helps to improve both our mental and emotional health. Studies show spending time socialising with other people helps us to boost our mood and decrease depression. It doesn’t matter whether it is just a phone call or an evening out with someone, it will help you become happier.
However, it is very important that the people you spend time with and socialise with are people who motivate you and have similar values with. Studies show that spending time with negative people will make you a more negative person too. So choose wisely when picking people to spend time with.
Most of us do not exercise nearly as much as we should do. We know it is good for our bodies but do you know it is also good for your mental health. Exercise will help boost chemicals in your body to help boost your mood. That includes dopamine, which regulates feelings of pleasure, as well as norepinephrine, which can help deal with stress.
So I know it is easier said than done some days but get up and get moving. I like to follow 10-15 minute HIIT videos from Youtube most morning and I find that helps me get into a good headspace for the rest of my day.
There are several studies that show if you are feeling stressed or negative forcing a smile will actually improve your mood. Even a fake smile will help improve your mood, according to science.
This is a very simple way for you to be happy and improve your mood. It may feel a little silly forcing a smile but it will help your mood.
Listen To Happy Music
If you are constantly listening to sad music your mood will reflect that, so another easy way to lift your mood is to listen to positive happy music. To improve this even more singing along or dancing will increase your mood even more.
Tidy and Declutter
Having a messy and cluttered hour or room can make you feel stressed and negative. So an easy way to improve your mood is to keep your house/room tidy and to declutter all the items that you no longer need or want. You can then donate or sell these items, I have recently started using the Vinted app to sell my unwanted clothes and accessories and it has been a super easy way for me to make some extra money.
These are lots of little things which can help you to be happy and improve your mood. You don’t have to do all of them but just doing a few will help. If you have any other ideas or tricks please let me know!
