What Is Journaling? – Journal Series Part 1

What Is Journaling?

Journaling is a life-changing habit that allows you to do so many things, such as:

  • Be true to yourself
  • Find your key values
  • Help you make more intentional choices
  • Help you understand yourself and the way you feel/think better
  • Can help you to not feel so overwhelmed and out of control

What Is Journaling All About?

Journaling is all about self-awareness, it allows us to identify negative thoughts and behaviours so we can alter them. It allows us to see all of the positive and negative things in our lives and to learn from them. Journaling helps us to understand ourselves better. The way we think and feel can be easily observed. This can be incredibly helpful in helping us to be able to understand ourselves, what we like or don’t like and how we react to certain things.

Once you have started journaling you will be able to personalise what pages and the way you write to you a bit more because you will know what you find useful and what you don’t. This is important because if you choose to journal a certain way or do certain pages that you aren’t really that interested in doing then you will not be motivated to journal, it will feel like a chore. Picking pages and ideas that work for you are crucial to make journaling a super easy and helpful habit.

Why Did I Start Journaling?

My First Attempt

When I first heard about journaling I was hooked, it all sounded too good to be true. All of these benefits just from writing some stuff down, I loved it. So I went out and bought a new notebook and a new set of pens and got to work. I read hundreds of blogs and scrolled through Instagram for hours looking at journaling inspiration and prompts.

I found loads of ideas and pages that other people were doing and I started copying them. Writing the same types of answers down that I had seen in other journals. I stuck to it for about a week, then I got bored. None of the pages inside were catered to me, none of the writing was actually my own. I was trying too hard to make my journal like other peoples and I didn’t actually take into account what was in my mind or what I really wanted to write. So I gave up, I put the journal away and I didn’t touch it for about a year and a half.

My Second Attempt

I started journaling properly about a year ago now and it is one of the best things I have ever done. I was apprehensive at first because my first go at journaling was a complete failure, or at least I thought it was for a long time. I soon came to realise I was very grateful for my unsuccessful first attempt as it allowed me to make some changes. I realised I needed to journal for myself so I need to choose pages and prompts that I liked. I needed to write about what was going on in my mind rather than copying what was going on in someone else’s.

It has allowed me to become more aware of myself, my worries and my strengths. I have discovered my core values and what matters most to me. Which has helped me to change my life so I am focused on the things that matter to me, rather than something that doesn’t really mean a whole lot to me.
